Imaging Detroit occurs this weekend, featuring over 65 films (including my first film short “I Am From Detroit”). Over the next several weeks I plan on featuring these films here. I’m struck by Lemonade Detroit for a few reasons, but the first is that I recognize the poet–David Blair. Blair was not only a poet, but an active member of the Revolutionary Workers League. He was involved in several struggles on Michigan’s campus during the eighties, and he resurfaced on campus during the Affirmative Action struggles twenty years later. He and I were usually on different sides–many Michigan activists had tense relationships with RWL members.

But he does work here, even though the general theme of the work is something I try to move against in I am From Detroit. Sadly, he passed away before the film aired.
