When Al Queda operatives destroyed the World Trade Center and hit the Pentagon, we missed an incredible moment. When President Bush was asked what Americans should do, he replied, “shop.”

In thinking about whether to tell “my 9/11 story” I came across a video about choice that made me think not just about Bush, but about the choices we routinely make, and how those choices themselves work to constrain and restrain us. Choice plays a very significant role in neoliberalism, as it operates on the assumption that societies work best when government empowers the market, increasing the ability of the individual and the organization to “choose.”
